Scott Stoll and Zoë Thoms recently attended the 15th annual Power of Water Canada Conference and Tradeshow held in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Hosted by the Ontario Waterpower Association, the event included a keynote address by the Honorable Glen Murray, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. Mr. Murray spoke about the impacts of climate change and noted that the waterpower sector's culture of innovation – in power generation, energy use and environmental sustainability – will continue to help the province become a key center of low-carbon advancement.
Participants came from across the country to hear presentations on issues affecting the hydroelectric sector, including waterpower procurement, First Nation partnerships, fish passage and protection, emergent small hydro technologies, environmental best management practices and public communications and engagement. The Regulator's Roundtable allowed participants to have an interactive and frank conversation with key federal and provincial regulators about the challenges faced in the development of new projects and opportunities for improvement.
