The Government of Alberta introduced Bill 22 - the Aboriginal Consultation Levy Fund in the legislature today. A copy of the Bill can be found here.

The purposes of the Bill are to enhance consultation and to establish a Consultation Levy Fund to assist First Nations and other aboriginal groups to participate in consultation (click here for the Governments' announcement). The amounts of the levy will be determined by regulation as will payments out of the fund.

First Nations and certain other aboriginal groups may access the fund for capacity development and to pay for the costs of participating in any required Crown consultation. The Minister will be responsible for administering the fund, including collecting the levy, administrative penalties and any interest and, for preparing annual reports.
