The Federal Department this week announced new fuel economy standards for heavy on-road vehicles.

The Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Engine Greenhouse Gas Emission Regulations will be phased in starting with 2014 model year heavy duty vehicles such as full size pickups, semi trucks, delivery trucks, buses and snowplows.  The government estimates that the new standards will, for 2018 model year vehicles, reduce fuel consumption by up to 23% and (for the 2014-2018 model years) reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19.1 MT.

The new standards will align standards with those already in place in the United States.
