On April 17, 2012, the Federal, British Columbia and Alberta
Privacy Commissioners jointly released the guidance document,
Getting Accountability Right with a Privacy Management
Program.
According to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the guidelines are
intended to act as "building blocks" for private sector
organizations in creating their privacy management programs. In the
announcement of the new guidelines, the Privacy Commissioner of
Canada emphasized not only the importance of the management and
protection of data collected by organizations generally, but also
the significance of the principle of accountability and the need
for organizations to create and foster a culture of privacy
protection.
