On April 17, 2012, the Federal, British Columbia and Alberta Privacy Commissioners jointly released the guidance document, Getting Accountability Right with a Privacy Management Program.

According to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the guidelines are intended to act as "building blocks" for private sector organizations in creating their privacy management programs. In the announcement of the new guidelines, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada emphasized not only the importance of the management and protection of data collected by organizations generally, but also the significance of the principle of accountability and the need for organizations to create and foster a culture of privacy protection.
