In the October 3, 2011 Throne Speech the Government of British Columbia announced the creation of a new statutory holiday for the Province, to be known as Family Day. The Province stated that the first Family Day will not occur until February 18th,2013 to give employers time to adjust to the additional statutory holiday in light of current economic circumstances. The B.C. Family Day holiday will occur the third Monday in February which is in line with Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, which all have statutory Family Day holidays in February.

This new Family Day holiday will be in addition to the nine statutory holidays currently provided for in B.C.
