On May 13 2005 the Ministry of Finance presented proposals to amend the tonnage tax regime. The proposals, which have just been adopted by Parliament, are based on the revised State Aid Guidelines on maritime transport adopted by the European Free Trade Association Surveillance Authority on March 31 2004.

The Electronic Communications Act came into force on July 25 2003. Under the act, the Post and Telecommunications Authority is required to analyze 18 product markets in order to identify any providers with significant market power and determine which obligations to impose on them.
The European Commission has adopted a white paper suggesting more competition is needed in the maritime sector. The white paper is the second step in an EU review which should culminate with concrete legislative proposals in 2005. Any proposal must then be decided upon by the EU member states.
