Cyprus
Cyprus recognised, as early as 1963, the political, economic and social importance of shipping. Since then, Cyprus managed to attract shipping entrepreneurs and to develop the island into a fully-fledged shipping centre combining both a sovereign flag.
Cyprus administers a major international registry within the European Union and controls one of the world's largest merchant fleets. This presently comprises 1,084 ocean going ships of total gross tonnage 21,283,373.
