On May 19, 2015, Demarest welcomed the most representative Basque Country companies engaged in business in Brazil in its São Paulo office. The event was organized together with Sociedad para la Transformación Competitiva, S.A. (SPRI). SPRI is a Basque  government dependent business development agency that supports and promotes the economic growth of Basque companies by providing assistances and services.

The event, primarily spoken in Spanish, was an excellent opportunity to publicly present the Spanish Desk of Demarest to all its attendees. The Demarest Spanish Desk, among others, offers a tailor-made service to our Spanish clients. Further, the Demarest Spanish Desk is composed of Demarest`s highly educated Spanish-speaking professionals, some of them having obtained their doctoral degrees from leading Spanish universities, such as ESADE.

After an introductory meeting, Demarest's auditorium received the representatives of Basque Country companies and held an opening speech of Ms. Begoña Aldekogaray (Director of SPRI in Latam) who welcomed the attendees and introduced the first speaker, Mr. Paulo Abasolo (Director of SPRI Brazil). Mr. Abasolo offered an overview of the current economic situation of Brazil and provided the attendees with his own forecast for the next few years.

After a dynamic and very interesting speech, the participants had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Gabriel Kuznietz, a M&A partner at Demarest with extensive experience attending foreign companies in Brazil. Mr. Kuznietz introduced Demarest law firm and gave a lecture on the administrators´ liability and the main mistakes to be avoided by them in order not to be responsible when doing business in Brazil.

Mr. Kuznietz graduated from Universidade Nacional de Córdoba Law School in 1994, earned an LL.M. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1997 and graduated from Universidade de São Paulo Law School in 2006.

After an excellent and interactive speech given by Mr. Kuznietz, Ms. Fabyola En Rodrigues, a corporate criminal partner at Demarest, closed the first part of the event with a brilliant lecture on Brazilian Anti-corruption Act that directly affects both local and foreign companies.

Ms. Rodrigues graduated from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo Law School in 1999 and finished her specialization in Corporate Crimes from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in 2002. Later, she obtained her master`s degree in Criminal Law from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo in 2005 and in 2013, she earned a PhD in Criminal Procedural Law from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC/SP).

After those presentations, the event was closed with a session where the attendees debated the hottest topics concerning situations CEOs of Basque Country companies have to face in their daily routine.

Demarest and SPRI will look forward to welcoming Basque Country companies again for another exciting day of learning and networking in the second half of 2015.
