Kameleon Homes is a building company that has recently been in the news for all the wrong reasons, leaving both disgruntled homeowners and contractors in the lurch after jobs have been uncompleted after payment and debts left unsettled.

Kameleon, for the time being, is more of a 'chameleon' than anything else. Nowhere to be seen and with its website and Facebook page taken down, the best the victims can hope for is for the Building Commission to recognise the problem and warn the public.

So what steps can you take if you are unfortunate enough to be left with an unfinished building job?

Well don't chew your fingernails down to the quick for starters. There is plenty to be done.

Your first job is to work out who is responsible. In the case of one of Kameleon's customers, contractors walked off the job after not having the money paid by the homeowner passed onto them by Kameleon. Step into their boots – as unpaid employees on your job, they have every right to leave - you would too.

Your best bet is to contact the company you are contracting with. If you have a direct contact person from the company, give them a call and ask what is going on. Explain the situation and see what their response is.

If you do not get a response or you are unsatisfied with the information provided, that is when you may consider getting a solicitor involved. It is important to know your contractual rights, including whether you can pursue the company for the set-backs to the construction of your property.
