We all know that to maintain the security of confidential information, we should ensure that when replacing old computers, hard drives are removed and destroyed or completely wiped, before disposal.

However, how many of us know that modern photocopiers, scanners and fax machines often contain hard drives which pose a similar security threat on disposal?

Insurance section partner, Stephen Williams, recently attended the 2013 Australian Insurance Law Association conference in Hobart where this issue was raised in a session on IT fraud. The CBS news story the subject of this YouTube clip was mentioned:

This is a serious IT security issue for all businesses or individuals who use photocopiers, scanners or fax machines. If not properly managed, it could lead, amongst other things, to breaches of privacy legislation, commercial loss, fraud and litigation, not to mention professional embarrassment and loss of reputation.
