Changes to NSW workers' compensation benefits have been recommended by a joint parliamentary committee this month, including the proposed abolition of "journey" claims, in which workers are covered for injuries whilst travelling to and from work. The committee also recommended the capping of medical expenses, a reduction in weekly payments and the cessation of benefits after a certain period. Families and dependents of those injured or killed on the job will also no longer be eligible to receive benefits for nervous shock.
NSW Finance Minister Greg Pearce said the current scheme was unsustainable and, without reform, would significantly disadvantage NSW businesses which faced the prospect of a 28% increase in WorkCover premiums, already 20 to 60 per cent higher than those in Victoria and Queensland.
