On March 5, 2019, the Government of Canada announced Matthew Boswell’s appointment as Commissioner of Competition for a five-year term. Commissioner Boswell has been serving as interim Commissioner of Competition for the past nine months, following the conclusion of former Commissioner John Pecman’s term.

Since joining the Competition Bureau in 2011, Commissioner Boswell has built a range of expertise, having served as the Senior Deputy Commissioner of both the Mergers and Monopolistic Practices and the Cartels and Deceptive Marketing Practices branches of the Competition Bureau. Prior to his time with the Competition Bureau, Commissioner Boswell was Senior Litigation Counsel in the Enforcement Branch at the Ontario Securities Commission, where he primarily prosecuted securities fraud and related matters.

Stikeman Elliott’s Competition and Foreign Investment Group has had the opportunity to work extensively with Commissioner Boswell on a wide range of matters spanning his diverse roles at the Competition Bureau and looks forward to continued engagement with him as he begins his term as Commissioner.
