The Department of Environment (DoE) reminds the public that the last day of the season to legally fish for lobsters is Monday, 29 February.
During the closed season, which runs from 1 March until 30 November, it is illegal to take, purchase, receive or possess lobsters originating from Cayman waters.
The DoE reiterates that while Cayman's warm climate can lead to some year-round instances of spawning, the closed season encompasses the months in which lobsters are most likely to spawn.
'The closed season is necessary because Cayman's lobster population cannot sustain a continuous harvest, even for local personal consumption only', said DoE Chief Conservation Officer Mark Orr. 'It facilitates a sustainable, controlled take of lobsters in the future.'
Persons who suspect that lobsters are being fished after the season closes on 1 March can call 911, or DoE enforcement officers directly:
- Grand Cayman: 916-4271 (949-8469 during working hours)
- Cayman Brac: 926-0136
- Little Cayman: 916-7021
