As we previously wrote about here, the New York Legislature has been considering a bill that would afford the protections of the New York State Human Rights Law to unpaid interns in the State of New York. Similar legislation passed in New York City on April 15, 2014, extending the protections of the New York City Human Rights Law to interns who work in the City, and takes effect on June 14, 2014. The State bill recently took a major step forward as the Senate Investigations and Government Operations Committee approved it with only a single vote against it. The next step is a vote in the full Senate.

We will continue to monitor this proposed legislation and will provide updates as they become available.
