This year ANZAC day falls on a weekend (Saturday). In previous years workers who worked a standard Monday to Friday working week have missed out on the ANZAC Day public holiday when it has fallen on a weekend because it was not otherwise a working day for that worker.

This changed with the introduction of the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day) Amendment Act 2013. While the Amendment Act came into force on 1 January 2014, the Mondayisation provision for these public holidays was not triggered because ANZAC Day 2014 and Waitangi Day 2015 fell on a Friday.

The Amendment Act provides if Waitangi Day or ANZAC Day fall on a Saturday or Sunday:

  • For employees who would not otherwise work on that Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday must be treated as falling on the following Monday.
  • For employees who would otherwise work on that Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday must be treated as falling on that day.

Celebration of Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day will still occur on the actual holiday date.
