Resolving Tech Disputes – A Deep Dive into the New JAMS AI Rules

Hon. Jackson Lucky (Ret.) joined JAMS in 2021 following 13 years as a judge with the Riverside County Superior Court. During that time, he presided over thousands of family law and unlimited civil cases.

Judge Lucky is a passionate technologist who has built and programmed computers for decades. His contributions to the computer programming website Stack Overflow put him in the top 11% of over 14 million worldwide users in 2021.

Judge Lucky has been an instructor for multiple organizations on virtual ADR. He is sought after to teach lawyers and judges throughout the state of California due to his ability to explain complex legal and technical topics in plain language.

Ryan Abbott, M.D., Esq., FCIArb, has mediated and arbitrated domestic and international disputes with collectively billions of dollars at stake. This has included disputes between some of the world’s largest companies represented by some of the most renown law firms, as well as disputes involving unrepresented individuals experiencing interpersonal disputes within family businesses. He has particular proficiency in the fields of intellectual property and health care, and offers unique experience in such matters as biologics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, medical and life sciences, computer technology and distributed ledger technology. Dr. Abbott is also the co-creator of the JAMS AI Dispute Resolution Rules. 

Dr. Abbott has served as partner at a litigation firm and general counsel of biotechnology companies. In these capacities, he has substantial dispute resolution experience as outside and inside counsel for both claimants and respondents. He has also worked as an expert for the European Commission, the United Kingdom Parliament, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

Dr. Abbott is a licensed physician and patent attorney in the United States (California and New York) and a solicitor advocate in England and Wales. He is board certified by the American Board of Legal Medicine. In addition to serving as a JAMS neutral, he is a CPR, WIPO, IACT, and United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) panelist, a CEDR-accredited mediator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). Dr. Abbott publishes and lectures on issues related to dispute resolution, as well as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and information and communication technologies.

Daniel B. Garrie, Esq. is a JAMS mediator, arbitrator, and Special Master selected by counsel and appointed by courts in complex disputes throughout the United States. He is an experienced jurist with a deep understanding of law and technology, as it applies to a variety of practices and industries, enabling him to resolve efficiently and cost-effectively some of the most challenging disputes. 

Daniel has garnered a national reputation for his experience at the intersection of technology and the law. He is as comfortable talking with entrepreneurs, IT professionals, and developers as with lawyers and judges. Most recently, Mr. Garrie was appointed and served as the Special Master for In Re: Facebook, Inc. Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation.

Daniel is a popular speaker on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, forensics, eDiscovery, fintech, and blockchain. He has also authored over 400 legal and technical articles and publications. His scholarship has been recognized by several Supreme Court Justices and cited in over 500 articles, publications, and opinions. He is also the co-creator of the JAMS AI Dispute Resolution Rules.

Daniel began teaching in 2008, where he was an Adjunct Professor, teaching data governance and cybersecurity at Cardozo School of Law and Rutgers School of Law. He teaches Cybersecurity Law, Cryptocurrency and Smart Contracts, and Computer Forensics classes at Harvard University. 

In addition to being a distinguished Neutral at JAMS, Daniel is a Partner at Law & Forensics, a global cybersecurity, eDiscovery, and forensics consulting firm he founded in 2008. Before joining JAMS, Daniel built and sold several technology companies and served as the Worldwide Director of Discovery & Information Governance at Charles River Associates.
