The federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) recently released The Guide to Getting & Using Your Health Records to provide patients, or their caregivers, with information on how to obtain, check, and use their health records.

The Guide explains that each person has a legal right to his or her health record and divides information about health records into user-friendly, digestible pieces for the general public. The Guide explains what comprises a health record and the formats in which a health record can be obtained, including electronic options. Throughout the Guide, the ONC highlights and explains frequently asked questions, and there are links within the Guide to supplemental resources, including mobile applications.

Healthcare providers may wish to review the Guide to be prepared for questions from their patients.
