On February 6, 2017, the House of Representatives passed the Email Privacy Act, which requires the
government to obtain a warrant before accessing stored electronic
communications held by third-party service providers. This bill
amends the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, under
which emails that have been opened or are more than 180 days old
are available with a subpoena. The same bill passed the House last
year but did not pass the Senate before the end of the session.
