On January 19, 2017, a jury awarded $20.5 million in a class
action lawsuit against a large satellite service provider. The
plaintiffs in this case alleged the service provider made more than
51,000 unwanted telemarketing calls in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act
("TCPA"). The jury awarded $400 for each unwanted call
placed by the service provider. The case marks one of the first
jury verdicts for a class of consumers alleging Do Not Call
violations since the TCPA's enactment.
