The Community Housing Fund aims to support an increase in housing supply in England by increasing the number of additional homes delivered by the community-led housing sector. The goal is to provide affordable housing at local income levels that remains so in perpetuity, whilst delivering a lasting legacy for the community-led housing sector.
The new funding will support community-led housing organisations, including co-ops and community benefit societies, to bid for funds to support the preparation of bids to the £11.5 billion Affordable Homes Programme, which will in turn provide the capital funding required.
According to the press release from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the Affordable Homes Programme is the largest investment in affordable housing in a decade, providing up to 180,000 new homes across the country, should economic conditions allow.
A further aim is to diversify the homebuilding sector by improving design, sustainability and quality through the development and use of modern methods of construction.
It is also envisaged that the £4 million will assist projects to access other funding streams and provide support to schemes at the beginning of the community-led housing process.
