European Commission opens in-depth investigation into the proposed merger of TeliaSonera and Telenor's Danish telecommunications activities

The European Commission has opened an in-depth phase 2 merger investigation into the proposed joint venture between the Danish operators TeliaSonera AB and Telenor ASA. Both companies provide telecommunications services in several European countries. The Commission has concerns that on the Danish mobile telecommunications markets, the merged entity would face insufficient competitive constraint from the only two remaining players.  Click here. 

CMA proposes to refer Poundland/99p Stores merger

The CMA has announced that the anticipated acquisition by Poundland plc of 99p Stores Limited will be referred for an in-depth phase 2 merger investigation unless acceptable undertakings are offered.  The CMA is concerned that the transaction gives rise to a realistic prospect of a substantial lessening of competition in 80 local areas where the companies currently overlap – and in a further 12 areas where they will be competitors in the near future.  Click here
