The former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations has dedicated his life to championing the rights and well-being of First Nations people.

Ottawa (Canada) – Fasken announced today that Perry Bellegarde, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, is joining the Firm as Special Advisor. His primary office will be in Ottawa.

Chief Bellegarde will be advising Fasken members and clients on Indigenous matters and culture with the goal of creating a better understanding when engaging in important conversations and working with Indigenous peoples. He will also work with Firm members to advance the goals and actions of Fasken's Reconciliation Plan.

"Chief Bellegarde's deep experience, understanding and knowledge of Indigenous peoples, issues and opportunities will be invaluable to our clients and governments in advancing projects and business objectives, as well as to the Firm in developing our own expertise and advancing our own reconciliation plans," said Peter Feldberg, Firm Managing Partner.

"A few of our colleagues have known Chief Bellegarde for years. More of us have come to know him over the last few months as we have discussed the possibilities around this opportunity. You cannot help but broaden your world view after a good conversation with Perry. We are so pleased to be bringing this opportunity of a deeper dialogue to our colleagues and our clients," said Martin Denyes, Regional Managing Partner, Ontario Region.

"I have spent my career advancing the rights and interests of First Nations and Indigenous peoples across Canada. I know firsthand how important it is for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to connect and to understand one another in order to advance human rights, as well as economic prosperity and development. I look forward to working with Fasken and its clients to continue to advance this vision," said Chief Bellegarde.

Chief Bellegarde's longstanding mission has been to close the gap between the quality of life among First Nations and other Canadians. During his tenure as National Chief of the AFN, he led the organisation through tremendous transformation and a marked increase in public awareness of First Nations concerns and priorities. His role at Fasken will serve to further this purpose by improving dialogue between business leaders and First Nations, so that all parties can benefit..
