HARRISBURG, Pa. — (September 30, 2022) McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC attorney James P. DeAngelo was recognized for his deep commitment to access to justice by MidPenn Legal Services at its Access to Justice event.
DeAngelo, commercial litigation attorney and McNees' associate general counsel, received the Donald F. Smith, Jr. MidPenn Pro Bono Award for his many years of tackling cases referred to him by MidPenn on behalf of low-income residents, his financial support of the organization and his years of service on its board.
MidPenn, a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal services to residents of 18 counties in central Pennsylvania, bestows this award annually to an attorney who provides his skill and expertise on a volunteer basis to support the provision of civil legal services to low-income residents.
"At MidPenn, we are all grateful for Jim's many years of support and friendship and express gratitude for his willingness to support the work we do as we strive to serve some of the most vulnerable citizens in our community," Rhodia D. Thomas, executive director of MidPenn Legal Services, said.
DeAngelo has a deep passion for pro bono work: He is the President-Elect of MidPenn's Board of Directors; a member of McNees' pro bono committee; has served as chair of the Dauphin County Bar Association's Public Service Committee since 1997; and is a leader of the Community Justice Project and Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
In 2021, DeAngelo was acknowledged by MidPenn for his tireless commitment to serving Pennsylvanians who cannot afford legal counsel and in 2017, he received MidPenn's Pro Bono of the Year Award.
The Access to Justice ceremony was an opportunity to recognize local justice heroes. Honored at the celebration were members of the legal profession who support MidPenn's mission of providing high-quality civil legal services for low-income residents and those who have made significant contributions toward achieving Equal Justice for all members of its community.

DeAngelo is co-chair of the McNees Automotive Dealership Law Group and handles litigation projects in state and federal court, administrative proceedings, arbitration and mediation.
As a business litigator, DeAngelo represents clients in all forms of transactional disputes including defense and prosecution of claims related to business transactions, claims involving corporate, partnership, and other business entity control, asset purchase agreements, stock purchase agreements, commercial lending, commercial leases, and non-competition agreements. He represents automobile dealers in franchise disputes including relocation, new point, and termination cases.
As Associate General Counsel to McNees, Jim advises the firm on ethics, conflicts, and loss prevention. He also serves as in-house counsel on professional and other litigation against the firm and its professionals.
