On Friday, January 31, 2019, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a new Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form, now available at: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9. The new form has a version date of "10/21/2019" in the lower left-hand corner and expires on October 31, 2022. Starting on May 1, 2020, all U.S. employers must use this version of the form. From now until then, employers may use this new version, as well as the prior version (07/17/17).

What has been updated on the form?

The only change to the form itself is the addition of two countries in the drop-down menu of the foreign passport field. This change is only relevant when employees complete the form on a computer. The form instructions have also been changed, but not significantly. These changes include clarification on an employer's authorized representatives, additional information on acceptable documents, among others. Employers should be most concerned about ensuring that they are using the latest version of the form starting on May 1, 2020.
