Today, 12 June, is Social Mobility Day, with a focus on “shifting the mindset”: shining a light on the benefits on a socio-economically diverse workforce.

Boult take our responsibility to improve access to our industry for aspiring attorneys from all backgrounds. Our commitment to promoting social mobility in our recruitment chain provides Boult with a larger pool of candidates to work with and has contributed to the diverse and welcoming nature of our team.

To achieve this, we partner with Rare Recruitment, to ensure a contextualised approach to our recruitment. “Contextualised” recruitment means taking an applicant’s unique personal background and the potential barriers to their success into consideration when reviewing their application. This assists us in sourcing outstanding trainee candidates who might otherwise have been overlooked by a conventional recruitment process.

It’s also why we are proud partners of The Sutton Trust, becoming the first firm in our industry to do so in 2020. The Sutton Trust is a charity that champions social mobility, aiming to inspire and encourage students from less-advantaged backgrounds to consider potential careers in STEM and professional industries. This is achieved through various programmes, including the Pathways to Law and Pathways to Engineering variants which Boult helps to deliver. The programmes are designed to raise awareness of potential career routes into engineering and law. Moreover, they also seek to provide attendees with some of the skills they’ll need to thrive in a career in our industry, including CV writing and networking skills.

“I am currently in my final year of my Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Birmingham. The Boult pathways programme was great and really helped me understand intellectual property as sector. In particular, it opened my eyes to how technical expertise can be important in the field!”

Past participant of the pathways programme, 2024
