We are proud to announce that three esteemed members of the Gowling WLG partnership— Michael S. Polowin , Kerry R. Powell, KC and E. Patrick Shea, KC —have each been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
This distinguished medal is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to their community, profession or Canada as a whole. The recognition of Kerry, Patrick, and Michael is a testament not only to their professional accomplishments but also to their unwavering dedication to public service and civic leadership.
- Michael Polowin, a partner in our Ottawa office and leader of our national Municipal Law Group, was nominated by Senator Mohammed-Iqbal Ravalia for his outstanding community leadership and volunteerism. Over the past two decades, Michael has played a vital role in strengthening civic and cultural institutions in Ottawa. He chaired the boards of Camp B'nai Brith of Ottawa, the Ottawa Jewish Community School and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa—leading each through pivotal periods of revitalization and resilience, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, he was appointed to the Ottawa Police Services Board, where he continues his commitment to building a safer and more inclusive community.
- Kerry Powell, a partner in our Calgary office, was nominated by Alberta Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long. With over 35 years of experience in construction, engineering and surety matters, Kerry has been instrumental in shaping Alberta's infrastructure landscape. His contributions include advising on major projects across Canada and internationally, and his active involvement in developing and revising standard construction contracts. Kerry's leadership roles in various industry associations further underscore his commitment to advancing Alberta's construction sector.
- Patrick Shea, a partner in our Toronto office and a Certified Specialist in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law, was recognized for his extensive contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering commitment to honouring and preserving Canada's military history. Beyond his legal practice, Patrick has spearheaded initiatives to commemorate Canadian law students who perished in World Wars I and II, leading to posthumous honorary calls to the bar and the publication of memorial works. His dedication has earned him multiple accolades, including two Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendations, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers, and the Law Society Medal—Ontario's highest legal honour.
