Goodwin today announces that Athena Kontosakou has joined the firm's Antitrust and Competition practice, as a partner in the Brussels office.

This appointment follows the recent opening of the firm's new office in Brussels and the arrival of leading EU and UK competition law partner Stephen Mavroghenis who will lead the firm's Brussels office. A team of associates are also expected to join on the ground in Brussels over the coming months.

"Athena's deep expertise in EU competition law enhances our ability to provide comprehensive counsel to our clients in Brussels. Her arrival, alongside Stephen, will also strengthen our global capabilities, reinforcing our position as a one-stop shop for clients navigating antitrust, mergers, and foreign direct investment challenges worldwide," stated Sarah Jordan, partner in Goodwin's Antitrust & Competition practice.

"I am absolutely thrilled that Athena is joining me, as a partner, on this exciting journey to build Goodwin's Brussels practice. Athena has been involved in some of the most high-profile unilateral conduct investigations before the European Commission and Courts, and her addition will significantly strengthen our bench. With our newly established team on the ground, we'll be able to work more closely with our clients, across the full spectrum of antitrust matters including merger clearance, behavioural investigations, state aid, and foreign investment and subsidies reviews," commented Stephen Mavroghenis, partner and head of Goodwin's Brussels office.

Athena advises on all aspects of European competition law with a particular focus on antitrust, merger control, unilateral conduct and state aid law matters as well as litigation across a range of industries including technology and telecommunications, financial services and energy before the European Courts in Luxembourg. She has also handled numerous matters on behalf of clients under the new EU Digital Markets and Services Acts regime, including before the EU Courts, showcasing her expertise in the technology sector.

The new team in Brussels are the latest addition to the firm's growing European Antitrust and Competition and foreign investment and subsidies platform following the hire of London partner Sarah Jordan who launched the practice in Europe in 2022 and Eram Khan who joined the London office in 2023. The firm also recently expanded the team in the US with the appointment of antitrust litigation expert Alex Russell in Washington, D.C. in February this year.

Goodwin's Antitrust and Competition team has unparalleled expertise in handling the full range of antitrust matters for the firm's clients, from merger clearance to complex behavioural matters and litigation. In tandem with the firm's focus on the technology, life sciences and private equity industries, the antitrust team brings decades of experience advising clients in these areas on their most complex antitrust matters.
