WeirFoulds LLP is proud to announce its new role in leading the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup, the premier trial advocacy competition for all law schools in Ontario. While WeirFoulds has sponsored the competition for almost 40 years, this is the first year that the firm has also organized and administered all aspects of the competition that will be held on Thursday, February 6 through Friday, February 7, 2025.
Established in 1988, the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup is named in honour of the late Honourable John D. Arnup OC, QC, a legendary Canadian litigator, former partner of WeirFoulds, and esteemed member of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
All of Ontario’s eight law schools compete annually in the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup. Each school selects a team of two student advocates. Full trials with witnesses are held in a Toronto courtroom before a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and a jury of experienced litigation lawyers who act as assessors. The winning and second-place teams are selected to represent Ontario at Canada’s national trial competition in Ottawa.

In assuming sole responsibility for organizing and sponsoring the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup, the firm demonstrates its commitment to promoting principles of professionalism and litigation excellence among Ontario law students while celebrating the remarkable legacy of the late Justice Arnup. More than a competition, the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup serves as a launchpad for the next generation of talented Canadian litigators.
