Mark D. Malloy is a trial lawyer who represents businesses in all types of commercial litigation, primarily advising companies in the areas of insurance coverage, extra-contractual liability, and professional liability.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Milwaukee.
What was your first job?
In high school and college, I worked as on the grounds
crew at a local country club. It was a great experience, taught me
great discipline working at 5:30 a.m. every morning, and was a
great deal of fun. I often look back fondly on those years.
Do you have any hobbies?
My free time is generally spent with my family. I enjoy
golfing with my kids on Sunday afternoons. My wife and I are also
foodies who love trying out the great cuisine in and around
Milwaukee. Our current favorite is Saffron in the Third Ward.
What is something on your bucket list?
Two very different places that I've never visited
– Hawaii and Ireland.
Why did you become an attorney?
It's been a while since I made that decision, but it
seemed like the logical next step after graduating with BA in
Political Science and having a general interest in being
employed.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
There really are no typical workdays for me. When not in
court or depositions, I am generally answering client's
questions, revising briefs, and planning litigation that best suits
the client's needs and wants.
Why did you choose your areas of practice?
The area I primarily focus on, insurance coverage and
extra-contractual litigation, essentially chose me. In the early
years, I became the person who typically answered coverage
questions within the firms I worked, and then I was lucky enough to
have mentors and clients who trusted me to handle those questions
and cases by myself.
What is your biggest achievement, professional or
personal?
I don't know that I would call it an
"achievement," but my most important role is to be a good
role model for my kids.
What activities do you participate in outside of the
firm?
I am a member of several trade associations and often
speak on topics related to coverage and extra-contractual
liability.
What is your favorite thing about MTFN?
I really enjoy working with my group on a day-to-day basis and
seeing the younger attorneys grow professionally each day. I am
also very thankful for partners that have supported me over the
years and allowed me to build a self-sustainable practice. While we
could easily be pigeonholed as being boring lawyers, there is an
entrepreneurial spirt that permeates through the firm that is fun
to be a part of.
What has been the most impactful advice you have
received about practicing law?
1. (Especially for young lawyers starting out) No case is
too small, and no case is small to your client.
2. After I gave a way too long closing argument at my first jury trial, the judge called me back into chambers, congratulated me on my efforts, and told me "remember, no sinner was ever saved after the first 15 minutes of the sermon." I have never forgotten that sage advice.
