On September 26, 1995, the President of the Council of Ministers, Lamberto Dini, announced the Italian government's plan for the privatization of the Italian gas, electricity, and telecommunications utilities. According to Mr. Dini, ENI S.p.A., which is involved in natural gas, petroleum, and pipeline activities, among others, will begin the privatization process before the close of 1995. ENEL S.p.A., the Italian electric company, will begin the process of privatization in 1996, and STET, the parent company of Telecom Italia S.p.A., will be privatized at some indefinite point in the future.
