Nov 10, 2017, Major U.S. companies affected by a significant tightening of H-1B visa rules should consider setting up in Canada and servicing their customers from here.

Businesses in the U.S. are finding it much more difficult to hire from abroad using the skilled worker visa, as immigration officers in the U.S. ask for more documentation, increasing the burden of proof on both the employer and the employee.

The opposite is true in Canada, where technology start-ups are hailing the impact of the Global Talent Stream, a Liberal government initiative that boasts two-week visa and Canada work permit processing as its headline benefit.

With a Canada immigration system geared towards helping skilled workers who come here on temporary visas stay long term and become permanent residents, the benefits of major businesses establishing offices north of the border are more apparent.

While U.S. President Donald Trump is yet to take any outright action in abolishing – or cracking down on – the H-1B visa, application processing has slowed to a trickle under the apparent direction of the White House.
