MLT Aikins lawyers David Filmon, K.C., Jordan Riese and Melissa Cattini (head of the firm's Franchising practice) recently acted for TPC Development Corporation ("TPC Development") in connection with its structuring, capital financing and acquisition of the master franchise rights for The Picklr in Canada (excluding Quebec).
With more than 390 locations scheduled to open in 42 states, The Picklr is North America's fastest-growing indoor pickleball franchise and is now expanding into Canada. This expansion is part of The Picklr's broader strategy to establish a strong presence in North America and beyond, with plans to enter at least five new countries by the end of 2025.
This strategic partnership will see TPC Development open 65 new locations across various Canadian provinces and territories, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. The first Canadian Picklr club is set to open in Toronto in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of indoor pickleball facilities in the country.
Headquartered in Winnipeg, TPC Development is led by Bernie Plett and Robert Lloyd. Bernie and Robert bring extensive experience in investment banking, finance, technology and sports management. TPC Development will drive the rollout of The Picklr franchises across Canada, providing exceptional customer experiences for franchisees and players alike. The partnership is expected to generate huge interest and growth in the Canadian pickleball community.
"We recognized the tremendous competitive advantage that The Picklr has developed to address the opportunity for indoor pickleball facilities in the U.S.," said Bernie Plett, CEO of TPC Development. "We are confident that the Canadian market will benefit from the years of experience that is now available across Canada for professional pickleball facility design and construction, membership programs, customer experience, venue sponsorships, merchandise and the full programming available to players of all ages and skill levels."
