Reforms needed to curb 457 rise

CFMEU win for exploited 457 visa workers in Canberra:
Update
The CFMEU has achieved an interim settlement for a group of workers
on 457 visas employed as construction workers on various Canberra
sites. Workers will be paid an interim payment while calculations
are undertaken to establish the quantum of underpayments to each
worker (26 March 2013).

Subclass 457 Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa Statistics:
State – Territory Summary Report February 2013
As at the end of February, there were 107 510 primary 457 visa
holders in Australia – up 21.5 per cent on this time last
year – and the total number of applications lodged so far
this program year is 8.3 per cent higher than over the same period
last year. The number of 457 primary visas granted from July 2012
to February 2013 was 4.8 per cent higher than the same period last
program year.
