Implementing and administering employee leave policies has only become more complicated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting changes in the workplace. In addition, the last few years have seen substantial new leave legislation at the state and local level, which raises additional questions about the intersection between those laws and federal laws like the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. We will discuss the overlap and interplay between these different kinds of leaves, potential pitfalls employers may confront, and solutions for mitigating risk when handling employee leave requests.
