Brandon Van Grack spoke to Bloomberg Law about Jack Smith, the new special counsel overseeing two of the Justice Department's most high-profile and politically sensitive investigations involving former President Trump.

According to Brandon, the appointment of Smith as special counsel will likely add speed and efficiency when it's needed most.

"This signals the teams will be able to focus only on that work and will have the resources to do it and the advocate to make sure they have those resources," Brandon said, adding that while Smith will need time to set up his office and catch up on the evidence-gathering and pending litigation, appointing a single supervisor ultimately will help move things along.

Brandon added that Smith's past experience investigating elected officials will complement the existing teams already deep into the weeds, and his status as a newcomer also offers "the perception of additional independence" to any forthcoming decisions.
