Czech News - August 1998 - Main Objectives Of The New Czech Government

Following the June general elections, a new government was appointed in July. The government was formed by the Social Democratic party.

Milos Zeman, the new Czech Prime Minister, announced five major objectives for his Government. These include:

  • combating economic crime, including corruption, tax evasion, and debt non-payment
  • acceleration of economic growth by applying active industrial, agricultural and pro-export policies
  • reform of public administration, including decentralisation(
  • reform of social legislation, including an increase in the minimum wage and the introduction of job programmes and
  • quicker harmonisation of Czech legislation with EU norms.
