Main benefits conceded to industries installed in Madeira Free Trade Zone are:

  • total exemption from VAT and customs duties on the importation of goods to be stored and/or transformed in the zone, and of equipment.
  • exemption from export quotas
  • subsidy on energy-efficient manufacturing processes
  • available factory and warehousing facilities
  • significant incentives are offered to employees of companies (national and foreign) operating in the zone, including 50% subsidy toward staff training costs.
  • exemption from social security contributions (employer contribution) for workers under 22 years of age with the status of trainees

Licensing process includes the submission of a formal application to the Madeira Regional Government with the following information.

  • Company name and address of the applicant
  • Nature of the industry and type of goods to be produced
  • the area where the company wishes to operate, including a topographical map. A plan of the premises, area required and access roads
  • indication of the production capacity of the industry unit
  • summarised description of the production technology and a list of the main productive equipment
  • total value of investments and sources of finance
  • period required for the installation and operation
  • indication of the number of jobs to be created
  • elements on effluent treatment facilities, where necessary.

1. Fees

1st payment of a fee in the amount of US 750 to the Madeira Development Company due for the license

2nd annual maintenance fee in the amount of US 13.50 per sq. meter.
