On the 12th of November 2014, the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) and the Netherlands Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) have signed a bilateral Letter of Intent to cooperate on regulatory matters.
As announced by Malta's LGA, this Letter of Intent is the first step towards greater cooperation between the regulators and will be followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), once the Netherlands' new gaming and betting act comes into force.
The regulators said the MOU will provide a framework for co-operation, aligning their processes and fostering stronger relations in order to ensure better regulation and organisation of the gambling industry, in particular the remote gambling industry.
Joseph Cuschieri, executive chairman of the LGA, commented: "This Letter of Intent gives a clear signal that the two jurisdictions recognise the mutual principles in the regulation of remote gambling and will help both jurisdictions ensure utmost consumer protection and a just, responsible and safe provision of gambling services applied through strong and inclusive systems and monitoring." Marja Appelman, chief executive of the Netherlands Gaming Authority, added: "This is an important step towards the development and sharing of common regulatory best practice, which should benefit consumers and operators in both jurisdictions."
The Netherlands' new gaming and betting act, which regulates iGaming for the first time, is scheduled to come into force in early 2015.
