The Articles 29 Data Protection Working Party has adopted an opinion in which it expresses concern over the data protection implications of the use of facial recognition in on line and mobile services. It recommends (as one would expect) that the informed consent of users should be obtained before these techniques are used to identify people in social networking services. In other areas where face recognition techniques are used, for instance authentication to control access to services and to categorise individuals in online gaming, again consent and reminders should be used.
