The European Commission is consulting over rules concerning the re-use of certain public information. Its purpose is to encourage use of mapping, legal and other information. The Public Sector Information Directive in 2003 sought to regulate the way in which certain public bodies make certain data available for re-use. The Commission now wants to find out whether more needs to be done and, if so, what. Based on a review of the position prior to this consultation, the Commission concluded that there was discrimination between potential users, excessive charges for re-use and complex licensing policies. People also did not know what public information was actually available.
