The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on January 30th that the implementation of the revised I-9 form has been delayed 60 days to April 3, 2009. The revised form (with edition date 02/02/09) was scheduled to go into effect today, February 2nd. The extension gives the public an additional 30 days— to March 4, 2009— to comment on the rule that revises the new form. The USCIS states that the delay will also provide the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) additional time to reevaluate the rule. For more information about the changes to the new I-9, see http://www.cozen.com/cozendocs/outgoing/alerts/2009/labor013009.pdf. Until the new form goes into effect, employers may continue to use the current form I-9, with edition date 06/05/07: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-9.pdf.
