New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman released a list of the top ten types of consumer complaints that his office received in 2017.  For the twelfth year in a row, internet-related complaints topped the list.

Here's the top ten:

  1. Internet (including internet services and internet providers, data privacy and security, child safety, and consumer fraud)
  2. Automobile (including buying, leasing, repair, service contracts, and rental)
  3. Consumer-related services (including security systems, restaurant/catering services, and tech repairs)
  4. Landlord/tenant disputes
  5. Utilities
  6. Credit
  7. Retail sales
  8. Home repair/construction
  9. Mail order
  10. Mortgage

Government enforcement often tracks the issues that generate a great number of complaints, so these are some important issues for marketers to keep an eye on in the coming year.

Fraudsters will always look for new ways to line their pockets at the expense of unsuspecting consumers. I encourage New Yorkers to educate themselves – and to continue reporting scams to my office, so that we can continue to crack down on scammers seeking to take advantage of New York consumers.
