The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a notice on February 5 announcing that effective March 5, 2018, teaching physicians can verify any student documentation in the medical record in order to document the required components of evaluation and management (E&M) services. Currently, physicians are required to re-document the work.

Since 2008, CMS has required the billing physician to independently document most of the essential elements of an E&M visit. This change in policy will significantly reduce the administrative burden on teaching physicians. More information on the instructions from CMS to the billing Medicare Administrative Contractors regarding this change is available in the Medicare Claims Processing Manual.
