The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed rule that would update the physician payment system under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) to reduce the administrative burdens for small practices. CMS released a fact sheet on the proposed rule.

Under the proposed rule, physician practices with no more than $90,000 in Medicare revenue or no more than 200 unique Medicare patients per year would be exempt under MACRA. For performance periods occurring in 2017, the low-volume threshold was previously set at no more than $30,000 in Medicare allowed charges or no more than 100 Medicare patients. Comments to the proposed rule will be accepted through August 21, 2017.
