REVISED TRAVEL BAN

Unlike the previous ban, the new directive does not include Iraq in its list of countries targeted. The effective date for the Revised Travel Ban is: March 16, 2017

3 PRIMARY REASONS FOR THE TRAVEL BAN REVISION

  1. CLARIFY MIX MESSAGING– Original travel ban reflected a "negative message" about the future of how Iraq and the U.S. will work together to eliminate ISIL
  2. GOVERNMENT AGENCY PRESSURE-Pentagon and State Department urged the White House to reconsider given Iraq's key role in fighting the ISIL
  3. MINIMIZE DOMESTIC & INTERNATIONAL CHAOS- provides the government agencies time to identify how they will properly vet foreign nationals traveling from the remaining 6 countries to alleviate domestic / international confusion resulting in protests and airport chaos

OPPOSING OPINION OF REVISED TRAVEL BAN:

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said the new ban was a "scaled-back version that shares the same fatal flaws".

SUPPORTING OPINION OF REVISED TRAVEL BAN:

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared the renewed ban is "a vital measure for strengthening our national security".
