On October 20, 2016, the European Data Protection Supervisor
("EDPS") published a press release discussing a system in which
individuals, rather than online service providers, manage and
control their online identity. The EDPS encouraged the Commission
to support the development of innovative digital tools such as
personal information management systems and take policy initiatives
that inspire the development of economically viable business models
to facilitate their use.
