Eric Fader was quoted in a November 9 article, "Incoming
Trump Administration May Mean Less Funding for HIPAA Audits,"
in Bloomberg BNA's Health Care Fraud Report.
Eric said that the incoming Trump administration may eventually be
forced to reduce funding for some healthcare initiatives to pay for
other priorities, such as large tax cuts and increased spending on
the military.
The audits conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR), which examine whether
healthcare organizations and their contractors are complying
with HIPAA privacy and security requirements, could be cutback
candidates. "I think funding for more subtle things, that the
general public probably doesn't notice or appreciate, is likely
to be cut eventually, and I would include OCR audits on that
list," Eric said.
Alternatively, he added, if OCR audits are seen as a way to
generate settlements with healthcare providers to raise funds for
the government, funding for the OCR could
be increased. In the short term, however, Eric pointed
out that Trump's stated focus on repealing the Affordable Care
Act should allow other existing programs to remain under the radar
and unchanged during 2017.
