The NFA asked its members and non-members to submit nominations for five Public Representative seats to be filled at its Annual Meeting on February 16, 2017. The NFA stated that "Public Representatives bring the perspectives of non-Members to the Board." Accordingly, candidates must (i) "be knowledgeable of the markets and the Members regulated by NFA," and (ii) "have no material relationship with NFA so that he/she can provide an impartial, objective analysis of the issues that come before the Board."

The terms of the current NFA Public Representatives will expire at the annual board meeting. Nominations by NFA members and non-members must be submitted to the NFA by January 13, 2017.
