The use of UAVs – also known as drones – is being explored in all industries, including oil and gas.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, have been authorized for commercial use in a number of industries. A recent article from Rigzone discusses the ways UAV technology is being used in the oil and gas industry. Here's what they found:

  • Drones, along with satellite technology, are being used to detect whales and other marine life that may be affected by offshore operations
  • Drones are being used to inspect flares while they are live, instead of having to stop production for a worker to carry out the inspection safely
  • They are being used for thermal mappings of oil fields and rock outcropping
  • Drones respond to spills and other hazards quickly and without endangering workers

New developments in UAV technology that will allow methane monitoring are already underway. To read more about how drone technology is disrupting the oil and gas industry, see the full article HERE.
