On July 12, the Commission adopted the Privacy Shield to provide a new framework for
transatlantic exchanges of personal data for commercial purposes.
According to a statement made by Vice-President Ansip and
Commissioner Jourová, the final version imposes clear and
strong obligations on companies handling data; ensures that U.S.
access to personal data for law enforcement and national security
will be subject to clear limitations, safeguards, and oversights;
and protects fundamental rights. Certification under the Privacy
Shield took effect on August 1. For more information, please see
the corresponding Jones Day Alert.
